Private northern lights bus in Tromsø for groups

Your own bus and a local driver who knows where the clouds break — for groups that want to chase the aurora on their own schedule.

Shared aurora buses leave at a fixed time, follow a fixed plan and fill up with strangers. With a chartered bus, the night belongs to your group: you choose when to leave, how long to stay out, and whether to stop for hot drinks or photos along the way.

Tromsø sits under the auroral oval, so the northern lights are often overhead between late August and mid-April. What decides a good night is cloud cover, and that changes from valley to valley. Our drivers live here and read the weather like locals — sometimes the best sky is twenty minutes out along the Kvaløya coast, sometimes it means driving inland towards the Finnish border.

How a chartered aurora night works

    • Pick-up at your hotel, conference venue or cruise ship in Tromsø.
    • The driver checks cloud and aurora forecasts and picks a direction before departure.
    • Stops only at safe, legal places with room to park — away from city lights.
    • You decide when the night ends; waiting time is part of the quote.
    • Drop-off where you want, also at several hotels.

    Who books it

Companies on incentive trips, conference groups who want an evening programme, photo groups who need time at each spot, and families or friends travelling together. The 9-seat minivan and 16-seat Sprinter suit smaller groups; for larger groups, ask about our coach.

Want a guide and photographer on board as well? Our private northern lights tour adds an aurora guide to the bus — see the Private Northern Lights page.

    Safety on winter roads

Arctic winter roads are icy and dark. Our drivers are used to them, but we never stop on road shoulders, in bends or in tunnels to look at the sky. If the forecast is poor everywhere within reach, we'll tell you honestly before you leave.

    Questions and answers

Can you guarantee we see the northern lights?

No — the aurora is a natural phenomenon and no one can guarantee it. We maximise your chances by driving to where the sky is clearest.

When is northern lights season in Tromsø?

Roughly from late August to mid-April, when the nights are dark enough. The darkest months, November to January, give the longest viewing windows.

How long is a chartered aurora evening?

Most groups are out for four to six hours, but you decide. The driver's working-hours rules set the upper limit.

    Does the driver also guide?

The driver focuses on driving safely and finding clear skies. If you want an aurora guide and photography help, ask about our Private Northern Lights tour.
